Support and Services

Why Pride Disability Services provide Participation in Community, Social and Civic Activities – High Intensity Daily Personal Activities Supports

LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities face heightened risks of social isolation and other challenges. Here are more examples of the risks they face and reasons why we provide High-Intensity supports at Pride Disability Services:

  1. Social Isolation: Due to stigma and discrimination related to both their disability and sexual orientation or gender identity, LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities often experience profound social isolation.

  2. Discrimination and Stigma: They may face double discrimination—both ableism and homophobia/transphobia—which can severely impact their mental health and access to services.

  3. Mental Health Issues: Higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues are common due to the compounded stresses of navigating multiple marginalised identities.

  4. Lack of Inclusive Services: Many services are not equipped or trained to handle the unique needs of LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities, leading to inadequate support.

  5. Health Disparities: They may experience disparities in healthcare access and quality, resulting in poorer health outcomes.

  6. Violence and Abuse: Higher risk of experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect both within and outside the home.

  7. Economic Disadvantage: Facing barriers to education and employment opportunities, they are at a higher risk of poverty and economic instability.

  8. Family Rejection: Higher likelihood of being rejected by family members, which can lead to homelessness and further isolation.

Providing High-Intensity supports for individuals with disabilities, especially from the LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse communities, involves several key elements:

  1. Addressing Complex Needs: High-intensity supports are designed to address the complex and multifaceted needs of LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities, ensuring they receive the comprehensive care they require.

  2. Personalised Care Plans: These supports allow for the creation of personalised care plans that consider both the disability and LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse-specific needs, fostering a holistic approach to care. Offering a range of supports, including personal care, mental health services, social support, and assistance with daily living activities, all tailored to the individual's needs.

  3. Person-Centred Approach: Tailoring support to the unique needs and preferences of everyone, considering their specific disabilities, identities, and circumstances.

  4. Enhanced Independence: Intensive supports help individuals develop the skills and confidence necessary to lead more independent lives, reducing their reliance on others.

  5. Improved Mental Health: Providing robust mental health support, including counselling and therapy tailored to their unique experiences, helps mitigate the high rates of mental health issues.

  6. Community Integration: High intensity supports facilitate greater social integration, helping individuals connect with inclusive communities and reducing social isolation.

  7. Safety and Protection: Ensuring the safety of LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities through vigilant care and supervision, protecting them from potential harm, abuse, or neglect.

  8. Empowerment and Advocacy: Supporting individuals in advocating for their rights and accessing resources empowers them to take control of their lives and fight against discrimination.

  9. Access to Healthcare: Facilitating access to comprehensive healthcare services that are inclusive and sensitive to both disability and LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse needs, ensuring better health outcomes.

  10. Economic Support: Assisting with employment and educational opportunities, providing pathways to economic stability and independence.

  11. Family and Caregiver Support: Offering respite and support to families and caregivers, ensuring they are equipped to provide the best care and support to their loved ones.

  12. Training and Education: Providing ongoing training for staff to ensure they are equipped to offer inclusive, respectful, and high-quality care to all clients, recognising the unique challenges faced by LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse individuals with disabilities.

  13. Collaboration with Community Organisations: Partnering with LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse and Disability Organisations to ensure that services are well-coordinated and that individuals have access to a broad network of support.

  14. Accessibility and Flexibility: Ensuring that services are physically and socially accessible, and that support plans are flexible enough to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.

  15. Cultural Competence: Training support staff in LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diversity, to ensure they understand and respect the identities and needs of the people they are supporting.

Incorporating High-Intensity supports within Pride Disability Services ensures that LGBTIQA+ and Gender Diverse Individuals with disabilities receive the comprehensive, personalised, and inclusive care they need to overcome the significant challenges they face and lead fulfilling lives.

Pride Disability Services provides quotes at the High Intensity support rate to help keep participants' budgets on track. This approach ensures that appropriate staffing can be accessed if a participant's circumstances require a more experienced support worker with higher qualifications. By doing so, we can address potential risks and special support needs effectively, ensuring the highest level of care and support for each individual.
